Car Clutter

Is your car full of clutter?

Get a plastic trash can bag. Get rid of all trash on the seats, floor and door pockets. Empty the glove compartment, storage compartments between the seats and any other storage places. Declutter the trunk and remove the papers building up on your visor and dashboard.

Return car registration, license plate receipt, proof of insurance and the vehicle's owner's manual to the glove compartment. DO NOT keep your vehicle title in the car. If the vehicle is stolen, the thief now has the legal title and he/she can use it to sell the car. It's a good idea to also keep a flashlight in the glove compartment for emergencies. I recommend one the doesn't require batteries. You either shake the flashlight or turn a crank to charge the light.

In addition to the items above, your glove compartment should only contain a few necessary items, such as your  sunglasses, maps you use, a pen and a small pad of paper.

Then, store some plastic grocery bags in your car to collect trash. The head-rests in my car come completely of the seat. I hang the grocery bag off the wire part of the head-rest on the passenger seat with the bag hanging over the back of the passenger seat. That way I can easily drop any trash in the bag by simply reaching behind the passenger seat. Empty those bags in the trash can each night or when they get about half full.

If you haul the kids around insist that they take all their clothes, sports equipment or gear, toys and fast food trash and anything else that doesn't permanently belong in the car with them when they get out. This goes for you, too. Remember, "monkey see, monkey do."

Keep two small to medium sized plastic tubs in the trunk or the back section of your van/SUV. One with emergency items and another with anything else you need to travel. These containers will help corral the clutter and keep things organized.

Once a week do a quick inspection and policing to keep the vehicle clutter and trash-free.
