Closet Clutter
First thing we
want to do to lessen our closet clutter is have clear
space on the bed or floor where we can do a little sorting and
folding.
Next, you're
going to need some storage gadgets for some of your closet
clutter. These can include containers, bags and racks. If you
have a home improvement store or a Container Store⢠near you
they are good place to find storage gadgets.
If. like me, and
you live a small town, and it's quite a ways to the nearest
home improvement store you can order everything you need
from Amazon. They are by far my favorite storage
gadget online store with over 1200 items.
1)
Sort by season. Pull something out of the closet.
It doesn't matter what. You are going to have two piles:
In-Season, and Out-of-Season. Place the item in the
correct pile. Continue pulling and sorting until the
closet is empty.
The closet is
cleaned out and your bedroom is a mess. We're finished. Just
joking!
2) Start
with the Out-of Season pile. Take one item at a time
and decide if you should keep, toss or donate. Ask yourself the
following questions to make the decision process
easier:
a) Does it or
did it ever fit and look good? If it doesn't fit or look
good on you and it's in good condition donate it.
Otherwise, put in a toss pile.
b) Is it in
or out of style? The 1970s called and want their peasant
dresses back. Yes the style might return however, yours is
still old and it shows. Toss it.
c) Does it
need repair and is it worth repairing. If you wore it
before the repair was needed, it can be easily/cheaply
repaired and it's still in style put it in a keep
pile.
d) Does it
belong to you. We women are known for borrowing
clothes. Give it back.
e) Special
occasion items that you have sentimental attachments to,
the senior prom dress, take a picture of it. And then toss
it. You can keep your wedding dress if you're still married
to the guy. Otherwise, donate or toss it.
f) Shoes and
boots with broken heels and straps should be tossed. Purses
that you haven't used in one year should be donated or
tossed.
3) Store
the keep items. Take the out-of-season keep items and
determine the storage gadgets needed to keep them out of the
way of in-season items. Shallow storage containers that can
slide under a bed will keep thinds neat and out of
sight.
If necessary, you
may need to use plastic clothes bags and tubs to store
off-seeson items in the basement, atttic or garage.
4)
In-season items.Go through the in-season pile exactly
as you did with the out-of-season pile. Asking the questions
from step 2. Try to get rid of as much as possible.
Shoes and purses can be stored in over-the
door racks and bins or put in storage containers and
placed on the closet shelf. Leave just ones you are
currently using.
5) Stuff
that doesn't belong in your closet. If you find items
that don't belong in the closet they need to be put where they
belong. If they don't have a home and/or you can't find a
suitable home for them, toss or donate them.
