6) Work Your Way Down.
Although we like to work our way up in the world, when it comes to cleaning we start at the top and work our way down. If you clean the lower surfaces and items first any dirt or cleaner that drips or falls will spoil the area we cleaned.

This also goes for painting rooms. Not that painting a room has anything to do with house cleaning, per se. I get a chuckle when I watch these home renovation and decorating shows and they are painting the walls before the ceiling. Of course they don't show you the part where somebody had to go back and touchup the walls where the ceiling paint splatter on them.

I guess it doesn't matter if the walls and ceiling are the same color, but it does matter when it  comes to cleaning. Always work your way down.

7) Turn off the TV.
If you get distracted from your cleaning by the TV, turn it off. If your all-time, can't live without seeing it show is on, reschedule your cleaning for before or after the show.

If you enjoy listening to music put your favorite CD in and crank it up. Dance your way through cleaning, or not.

8) First to go is dust. This is a must.
Always do the dry part of cleaning first. Dust your furniture, lamps, shades and knickknacks before wet cleaning. The more you can dry clean the less problems there will be with streaking, dust settling on cleaned surfaces, and potential spilling.

Remember tip # 6. Start your dusting with the items highest up and work down.

9) Fresh as Spring breeze.
Carry a box or two of baking soda in your cleaning caddy and sprinkle a little in those musty, smelly places. The bottom of wastebaskets, shower and tub drains, and if you have smokers in the house put a little in the bottom of ashtrays.

Baking soda will also eliminate orders in carpets caused by pets. Sprinkle it lightly over the entire carpet and let it sit for 5 minutes and vacuum it up. It will also help eliminate that funny smell in your vacuum cleaner.

An open box in the fridge will absorb the strong food odors such as onions, garlic, egg salad, etc.

10) A place for everything and everything in its place.
When you are done cleaning, return all your cleaning supplies and caddies to their assigned storage spot. You will always know where they are and they will be easy to grab when the mood strikes to speed clean.

Here are some of my favorite cleaning supplies and brands. Give them a try. They will make your house cleaning easier and quicker.
