Ten Speed Cleaning Tips

Tips 1 through 5:

1) Get all of your speed cleaning supplies together in one place. The more time you spend hunting for your cleaning supplies the more time it takes to finish the job.

Get a cleaning or utility caddy to keep your cleaning supplies together. I bought a couple of them from Amazon. They were less than $15.00 for both.

I use one caddy strictly for bathroom cleaning supplies and the other one for general supplies. For example; furniture polish, all purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, polishing rags, etc. go in the general purpose caddy.

The bathroom caddy has the heavy duty cleaners for the tub/shower and the toilet. I also keep the Johnny-mop in the caddy, but with an empty plastic cottage cheese container for the brush end to rest in. This keeps any of the water left on the head from spreading around to other items in the caddy. I replace the cottage cheese container every couple of weeks or so.

Get yourself a caddy or two and stop running around after the cleaning supplies. You will be glad you did.

2) Do NOT clean something just because it is cleaning day.
If ain't dirty, don't clean it. If the guestroom hasn't been used since last week when you cleaned it, skip cleaning it this week.

If the refrigerator hasn't been spilled and dumped on, let it go this time.

Bottom-line: Clean the dirty, messy things and leave the rest alone.

3) Do NOT let messes accumulate.
Clean messes up when they happen. Spills and splatters on counters, cabinets, floors, stove, refrigerator and in the microwave are a lot easier to clean when they happen. If you let them dry and get crusty the longer you will need to scrub.

There is a lightweight stick vacuum by Electrolux (Pronto 2-in-1 Stick Vac- EL1000A)  that I use for daily cleanups. It converts from a stick vacuum to a handheld. There is a crevice tool for the handheld, two power settings and works on carpet and bare floors. It weighs about ten pounds in the stick vacuum mode which makes it easy to carry around. The darn thing is powerful, too.

If you see something out-of-place and you are heading in the direction of the right place, pick it up and put it where it belongs. Keep on your family to do the same.

4) Spare the cleaner and spoil the surface, or something like that. People have a tendency to overuse cleaners and cleansers. Don't fall for the instant results gimmick in the TV commercials. Most cleaners take a few moments to soak in and loosen the dirt. Spray or spread a small amount on the dirt and give it 30 seconds.

If the dirt is really baked or stuck on, apply a small amount of cleaner directly to the mess. Then fold a paper towel sheet so it is about the size of the mess and press it into the cleaner you applied. You may want to apply a little more cleaner to the paper towel so it stays moist. Let it sit for a few minutes and wipe away the mess like it was never there.

Too much cleaner can damage some surface and they leave a residue that traps dust and dirt. Easy does it is the rule when using cleaners and cleansers.

I try to use environmentally friendly cleaners when I can. I find they work as well, if not better, than some of the regular types.

5) Leave the easiest for last.
Or, clean your least favorite room or thing first. This gets it out of the way and you can look forward to the easier cleaning chores.
